November Bulletin

Thanksgiving Prayer

Dear God, as round the table we are gathered by Thy grace,

We pause to thank Thee for this food and for each smiling face.

How wonderful that we can share these moments once again

With those we love but seldom see – how long the time has been!

We thank Thee for Thanksgiving Day, this special time of year

When we can meet with pleasure all the ones we hold so dear.

Bless those of us now far away; please let their spirits be

Here with us round this table, Lord … one happy family.

And as we take our places here and fill our plates with food,

Lord, may our hearts and minds be filled with special gratitude.

*Phyllis C. Michael*

SS Collections

The Sunday School collects for various brethren, community members, etc. throughout the year.  Some of you have expressed that you are interested in knowing who the SS is collecting for so you can make a donation if you wish.  So, these collections will be posted on the message board by the lunch room & in the Baby Room for anyone who is interested.

Lost Items

We still have two sweatshirts that were left at Jake & Julie Ista’s house during the World Relief Work Project held there this past summer.  One is grey & the other is black with “Illinois State” on it.  There was also a piece of equipment left.  It is metal with a rectangular cement stepping stone inside.  Please contact Darel or Mary Alyce Hofsess if these items belong to you.  Thanks!

Thank You

I wish to thank everyone for the gifts of food, cards, & prayers during Glen’s illness & finally going home to his final rest.  Dorothy Stuber

The ENTIRE church has been invited to a singing at Bradford on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.  If you are interested in attending, please sign-up on the sheets provided at the message center.  If you have any questions, please contact Marv or Paula Wagenbach. Thanks!

Domestic Center Open House

The Domestic Center is a training school in Les Cayes, Haiti which operates nearby where our own missionairies work.  The school specializes in teaching Haitian women the domestic arts.  We will be displaying some of the linens, needle-work, & other handmade items … such as purses, bags, & sweaters.  By selling these items to Americans, we hope to assist these women in the daunting task of providing for their families in one of the poorest countries in the world.  The Domestic Center Open House will take place at the FH on Friday, November 6th from 3:00-9:00 p.m. & Saturday, November 7th from 9:00-12:00 Noon.

Gifts of Love

This will be our fifth year for Gifts of Love which provides Christmas gifts to the needy in our Tremont Community.  If you are interested in participating, there are informational sheets available at the message center at church or contact Renee Kaiser.  Thanks!

The All-Church Caroling (children included) will be on Friday, December 4th at 6:00 p.m.  The Adult Church Caroling (adults only) will be on Friday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m.  You are invited to attend BOTH carolings.  There will be sign-up sheets for attendance/food at the message center.  PLEASE sign-up if you plan to attend.

Volunteer Opportunity

A vehicle storage building is scheduled to be built this fall behind the existing Material Aid Center in Fairbury.  This will be a 60x180 pole building type structure.  The project will begin as soon as the crop is harvested from the site.  The site work is expected to begin in late October depending on the weather.  At that time there will be a need for semis with dump trailers & drivers to haul clay fill to the site.  After the ground work is completed, carpenters will be needed to work on the construction of the building.  This is expected to begin in early to mid November & continue for 2-3 weeks depending on the number of volunteers & weather conditions.  Anyone interested in working on this project should contact Bro. Ray Slagel for the most current work schedule information at 815-848-3714.  Thank you!

World Relief Informational Meeting

A WR Informational Meeting will be held on November 14th  from 8:00-4:00 p.m. at the Bluffton FH.  The meeting is designed to provide WR reps & interested brethren with an overview of WR activities & opportunities.  Lunch will be served.  There will also be an evening program at the FH.  Check the WR website at www.acworldrelief.org for a meeting agenda.

INFORMATION ON H1N1    (SWINE FLU)

Due to the fact that a number of inquiries have been received with regard to implications of the outbreak of H1N1 influenza, the Medical Issues Committee was asked to review this topic by the Elder Committee.  Following is a summary of their recommendations:

  • Give some comfort that we care and are monitoring the situation
  • Give encouragement and endorsement to stay at home if ill
  • Make people aware that this is more serious than the routine winter illnesses and to treat it accordingly
  • Assure that we will do all we can to preserve our patterns of greeting and Communion

We wish to emphasize that it is important to preserve our order of Communion and Holy Greeting and that we see no need at this time to make significant adjustments.  The most responsible and long accepted counsel is that if any one has symptoms of a potentially contagious disease, they should at a minimum abstain from greeting and in many cases it is best to stay home.  Quite often there are make-up Communion opportunities available.

Another alternative which has been used by some elders regarding Communion is to offer the option to individuals who have minor symptoms or to those who may be particularly susceptible to bring a small cup or glass (or this can be made available) which is used for serving them rather than sharing the common cup.

The Medical Issues group will continue to monitor the situation and report to us any further public health advice which may be of significance.

General Instructions to our Congregations to consider:

If you’re experiencing flu-like symptoms, stay home so you don’t spread the illness to others.

·         Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.  If tissue is not available it is preferable to cough into your elbow to help keep the virus off your hands.

·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread this way.

·         Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer prior to eating. Note that there are new individual anti bacterial wet wipes at the lunch tables.
